Emachu

Introduction

Main Web Site

Emachu, whose sales revenue in 2003/4 was Yen 17 billion (cUS$ 150 million), is a small, family-owned trading company specialising in (wooden) housing materials. It also operates wharves and log yards and generates revenue from property development.

The company's sales revenue from timber fell sharply in 2002 and has fallen further since then.

North America supplies the majority of Emachu's imports of logs and sawn wood. Russia supplies roughly 10% of the company's log imports.

Scale of Tropical Timber Trade

Emachu imported cYen 0.4 billion of Russian logs in 2003/4 - roughly 1% of Japan's log imports from Russia and equivalent to about 50,000 cubic metres.

Policy on Use of Tropical Timber Products

Emachu and several other Japanese companies were exposed by Greenpeace in 2001 for procuring timber from Interfor - a controversial Canadian timber company. This may account for some of the decline in Emachu's sales in 2002 and may indicate that the company would respond well to requests that it meets the expectations of its customers to supply timber (from Russia) that is legal and from sustainably managed forest.
