Sumitomo Corporation

Introduction

Main Web Site

Sumitomo Corporation, the nucleous of the group of companies who share the name "Sumitomo", is one of Japan's largest integrated trading and investment companies. Its annual revenue in 2003/4 was Yen 9 trillion (cUS$ 80 billion). The company's subsidiaries, affiliates and investments are world-wide and cover many sectors - particularly timber, wood chips, pulp & paper and the development and management of property.

Businesses Dealing in Products Based on Tropical Timber

Relevant enterprises managed by Sumitomo Corporation include:
OAO Terneyles (logging in Russia - also known as JTC TerneiLes),
PTS Hardwood (hardwood processing in Russia),
Seven Industries (timber products from Russia),
STS Technowood (softwood processing, especially LVL-plywood, in Russia),

Sumisho & Mitsuibussan Kenzai (timber building materials, website Japanese only),
Sumisho Paper (pulp and paper), and
Sumisho Tatemono (housing - sale and remodelling).

Sumitomo Corporation is Japan's leading supplier of Russian timber. The company's Russian business, having found itself with excess capacity, also exports logs to China and South Korea.

Sumitomo Corporation and Russian timber company Terneyles have jointly procured - probably illegally - a large logging concession in the Samarga Basin. Remarkably, it is likely that the FSC-certificate for 1.4 million hectares of forest which Terneyes has been awarded in Primorsky Krai includes its concession in the Samarga Basin. Sumitomo Corporation expects that this concession will produce almost 300,000 m3 during 2005 and 1.2million m3 in 2009.[ref: Japan Lumber Report (28 January 2005)] 95% of log production will be imported into Japan by Sumitomo Corporation.

Sumitomo Corporation supplies the third largest share of Japan's wood chip imports. At least some of that share derives from controversial sources, for example, Ecuador.

Other companies how share the Sumitomo name include: Sumitomo Forestry (lumber and wooden housing), Sumitomo Mitsui Finance (lending to housing sector), and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction (building and civil engineering).
