Mitsui & Co

Introduction

Main Web Site

Mitsui & Co. is one of Japan's largest integrated trading and investment companies. Its annual revenue (from trading transactions) in 2003/4 was Yen 12 trillion (US$110 billion). Together with its numerous subsidiaries, affiliates and investments, Mitsui & Co.'s business interests are world-wide and include most market sectors - particularly lumber, building materials and housing, also pulp & paper.

Mitsui & Co. has mill operations in Russia and Indonesia and has supplied large quantities of timber from Indonesia.

The company owns a total of 39,000ha of forest in 56 locations around Japan.

Businesses Dealing in Products Based on Tropical Timber

Relevant enterprises include:
Mitsui Bussan Home-Techno,
Sumisho & Mitsuibussan Kenzai,
TM Baikal,
PT Katingan, and
PT Techno Wood.

Mitsui Bussan House-Techno constructs wooden housing.

Mitsui & Co. and Sumitomo Corporation jointly own building materials supplier Sumisho & Mitsuibussan Kenzai.

Scale of Tropical Timber Trade

TM Baikal has been one of only two major suppliers of Russian sawn wood to Japan. In Irkutsk, (where TM Baikal operates) illegality appears to be the norm as exemplified by TM Baikal procuring logs access to which is separately procured on the black market. TM Baikal is a joint venture between Mitsui & Co., Tajima Lumber and the Irkutsk authorities. Tajima Lumber is Japan's leading dealer in Russian sawn wood (c0.2 million m3 RWE/year, roughly half from imports from TM Baikal and half from imported Russian logs processed at its sawmill in Toyama prefecture).[ Ref: Japan Lumber Reports (6 August 2004)]

PT Katingan Timber (whose mill on Sulawesi has an annual input capacity of 0.2 million m3 of logs) supplies Japan with Indonesian plywood.

Policy on Use of Tropical Timber Products

Amongst other things, Mitsui & Co.'s environmental policy requires its businesses to comply with environmental laws. The implementation of this policy with regards to illegal timber remains doubtful with regards to its affiliates and suppliers of timber from Indonesia and the Russian far east.

Mitsui & Co.  asserts that by participating in a tree farm project in Australia the company will help conserve natural forests, a statement whose logic remains unclear and doubtful.

Mitsui & Co's promotion of Green Procurement appears to focus merely on the company's internal purchases, and not, much more importantly, on the goods which the company trades or re-sells, which obviously accounts for most of its ecological and social footprint.
