The Center of the Global Trade

Asia lies at the heart of the global trade in tropical timber products. The trade flows from the developing economies of Southeast Asia to the consuming economies of North Asia, largely Japan and China. Exports to Japan have seen the forests of the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam dwindle to less 5% of their original cover. The Philippines in particular, has suffered devastating losses in its forest cover, and the government blamed over-logging for floods which killed thousands in 2004. Currently the trade is largely from the Russian Far East and Indonesia to China and Japan. A growing exporter is the island of Papua. The sector in Asia is known to be rife with corruption and widespread flouting of national logging laws, and the key issue for the industry is how to tackle illegal logging. The following chart summarises the main trade flows.
