Hanwa

Introduction

Main Web Site

Hanwa, whose annual sales revenue in 2003/4 was Yen 682 billion (cUS$ 6 billion), is a trading company specialising particularly in steel and related products.

Hanwa's timber sales doubled between 1997/8 and 2001/2 (to 0.7 million cubic metres). The company, which supplies major corporate buyers, has become one of the leading suppliers to Japan of sawn wood.

Hanwa supplies plywood and, since 1998, veneer from Indonesia and sawn wood and plywood from China. Hanwa also supplies sawn wood from Malaysia, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the USA, also from Russia and Chile.

The company supplies timber to mills in China which is subsequently exported to Japan after processing. There is a risk that China's wood-based product exports derive from illegal timber and unsustainably managed forests - particularly if supplies shipped from Malaysia account for a substantial share of those mills' wood raw material. Hanwa's customers would be assured that those supplies exclude such timber if the chains of supply (and forest origin) of its timber imports from China were credibly certified - to FSC or equivalent standard.

Scale of Tropical Timber Trade

Hanwa supplied 0.2 million cubic metres of plywood and veneer (from Indonesia) in 1999/2000. It is likely that Hanwa now annually supplies a roundwood equivalent volume of 0.6 million cubic metres of timber from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Russia.

Policy on Use of Tropical Timber Products

The company strives to meet the expectations of its stakeholders (including investors). The company's Mid-Term Business Plan envisages aggressive management. The company has no clear policy or targets relating to sourcing of legal and sustainable timber sources, essential given the regions in which it states it imports timber and timber products from.
